I’m so very excited to be part of a new blog circle for photographers called “Outside the Box”! The idea is that each member blogs about the same theme and then we link to each other’s blog at the end of the post. The reader can then follow the link and “circle” through all of the blogs to see how each photographer interprets the theme. Isn’t that awesome!! This week’s theme is “Negative Space”.
Negative space is a pretty common photography compositional technique. It simply refers to the balance between the subject of the photograph (the positive space) and the background (the negative space). Often times photographers will purposely leave more negative space in the picture as a way to draw the viewer’s eye to the subject. It’s one of my favorite techniques to use! Something about it seems to evoke more emotion in the image for me. Your eye moves around the whole frame, but still comes back to the subject.
Hopefully I didn’t lose you with the technical explanation. I think once you see the examples it will make sense 🙂 So here is my take on this weeks theme…. make sure to check out St. Louis & Edwardsville Maternity, Newborn & Family Photographer Anne Meintrup Photography to see how she interpreted the theme too!!
I love to use negative space in my studio maternity and newborn photography.
It’s also a great technique to use for small details, still-life images, and landscapes!
But it doesn’t always have to be shot inside or have a completely blank background. Negative space can be used to give perspective or add a sense of movement through an image.
Thanks so much for stopping by everyone! I hope you enjoyed the images. Feel free to ask any questions or leave a comment 🙂 And once again, make sure to check out this theme on St. Louis & Edwardsville Maternity, Newborn & Family Photographer Anne Meintrup Photography blog as well!!
